BARBARIZE

"Manifesta" brings to the stage the vibrant afropop duo Barbarize from Recife, consisting of Bárbara Espíndola and Yuri Lumin. This spectacle celebrates cultural resistance, articulated through a sonic fusion that incorporates bossa nova, funk, trap, and rap, influenced by artists such as Beyoncé, Stromae, and Rincon Sapiência. Described as "Afropop do ‘brabo’" by Yuri, Barbarize's music mixes pop with energetic African rhythms while echoing the voice from the margins through manguebeat.

Originating from the Comunidade do Bode in Recife, Barbarize has been a standout act in the Brazilian music and cultural scene since their solidification in 2018. Not only noted for their innovative music, the duo is deeply committed to emphasizing the experiences and expressions of black and peripheral youth. Their work, blending music, dance, and theater within a vibrant Afrofuturist aesthetic, is showcased in their recent project, "SobreVivências Periféricas"—a series of six music videos depicting the life, culture, and resilience of peripheral communities.

Facing the challenge of accessing event spaces outside the periphery, Barbarize embodies the ongoing struggle to be recognized, reflecting the reality many peripheral artists face. Yet, they underscore the growing resistance and the creation of opportunities by artists and collectives redefining the local music scene. Inspired by Mangue Beat, a resistance movement started by Chico Science in 1991, Barbarize's songs like "Cobra" and "KiCalor" criticize the lack of support for favela artists and demand visibility and recognition.

Each performance in "Manifesta" is a powerful demonstration of resistance and celebration, highlighting the nuances of blackness and peripheral realities in every beat and verse. Come experience the transformative energy of Barbarize, where each movement and note is a call to reflection and dance, celebrating the powerful voice of a community that vibrates, resists, and expresses its art intensely. This show is a poetic journey through music that resonates as a cry of resistance, transforming each movement into an act of cultural empowerment.
